Tiny
colonies,
infinite
wonder.

A living catalogue of the world's smallest ant — Solenopsis molesta — raised, observed, and shipped in conditions worthy of a minor museum. Each colony arrives ready to occupy your desk, your daydreams, and an unreasonable amount of your attention.

Discreet, industrious, and almost imperceptibly magnificent.

First catalogued in the lower-Mississippi soil records of 1859, the thief ant earns its name by tunneling alongside larger colonies and quietly relieving them of their eggs and larvae. It is one of the rare species to maintain its dignity at a millimeter and a half.

Their workers move with the unhurried determination of a curator setting up an exhibit. Their queens — modest by ant standards at five millimeters — preside for up to four years over colonies that will, in time, number in the hundreds. They communicate chemically, build chambered cities through gypsum, and, when given a panel of glass, will allow you to watch.

What we offer here is not a novelty. It is the smallest viable observatory of social life that we know of.

From queen to quiet wonder.
Four unhurried movements.
i
Choose a colony

Pick from the Starter Vial (a queenless workforce), the Established Habitat, or the Cabinet Edition. Queened editions are aged at least sixty days in our facility before release.

ii
We pack with care

Your colony travels in a temperature-stabilized vial, cushioned in archival-grade fibre. Hydration is sealed inside the chamber so the workers feel only a long, gentle quiet.

iii
48-hour live arrival

Express delivery, tracked end-to-end. If a single ant fails to arrive in good order, we will reship the entire colony, no questions asked, at no cost to you.

iv
Begin your observatory

Set the chamber away from direct sun, drop in a feeder, and wait. Within hours the colony will begin to explore. Within days, the city begins.

A miniature observatory, built on principles from the field.

Every habitat we ship is hand-finished from cast acrylic, sealed against the very smallest escape, and pre-tunneled with food-grade gypsum to give the colony a foothold from the first hour. The result is a chamber that feels less like an enclosure and more like a portable section of soil.

05
A short almanac of colony care.
Conditions for a quiet flourishing.
Temperature
68 — 78°F

Room-temperature comfort. Avoid direct sun and the back of refrigerators. The colony will pick its own warm corner inside the chamber.

Humidity
55 — 70%

Top up the hydration tube once a week. The internal sponge wicks moisture into the soil, keeping brood viable and tunnels intact.

Feeding
Every 3 days

A grain of rice, a sliver of fruit, the smallest possible drop of honey-water. They eat less than you'd guess and waste almost nothing.

Lighting
Soft, indirect

Indirect daylight is welcome. Direct sun cooks the soil and stresses the colony. A bookshelf or quiet desk is ideal.

Growth
×10 in year one

Expect modest growth in the first month, then a rapid expansion as the queen settles in. Most cabinets reach capacity by month nine.

Manual
24 pp.

A linen-bound care manual ships with every colony. Field tested, illustrated, and small enough to live beside the habitat.

Field notes from private collectors.
I expected an oddity. I received a tiny civilization. Three weeks in, the chamber has more architecture than my last apartment.

The packing alone was a small ceremony. The queen began excavating before I had finished my coffee. Worth every cent of the upgrade.

I bought it for my eight-year-old. He has stopped asking for screen time. The ants have, in effect, raised him for the past month.
